[ – ] HungryJeff1 reply Ah, I see what you're saying now. I agree, as much as I love a superb storyline, if it's too detailed and great to the point it affects the gameplay and limits how you can play it, it really becomes less about the game and more just like a interactive movie. Good analysis!-

SilverZephyrStudio reply While I wholeheartedly agree with what you are saying about the specific games you are talking about there are plenty of examples of mainstream games that present an excellent gameplay and story experience, for example; Resident Evil 7 which mixes a puzzle, survival, horror and shooter game all into one mix which gives makes sure there's always something new around the corner in its mechanics The Last of Us, in my opinion, falls into the "cinematic" game category along with quite a few other games like the older Heavy Rain. So while I agree I think the problem is pretty isolated if you want good mechanics play Final Fantasy 15, but for the casual user who is just beginning to get into gaming these games ring out to them as options they can enjoy without being "true" gaming enthusiasts. -

MetalheyCentral reply I've always found that TLOU is more of an experience then anything. I loved the shit out of it, story was amazing and it did a great job at making you care about the characters. I agree it's a one and done game since you only get to experience that feeling once. Games are falling into this trap of a straight line these days. Doesn't matter what you do it all plays out the same way. -

[ – ] Calibri_Funtimes reply To be fair, if a game's story line isn't compelling me to reach the end, I'm very likely to just not care and probably not finish the game. Thanks for sharing!-

[ – ] Tibasu reply When you're talking about AAA games, you have to remember that these companies look at charts to see what sells, then imitate it. They don't often care about crafting a masterpiece as long as what they put out sells. I believe there is a place for games that focus more on story rather than having good combat mechanics or a variety of mechanics to play around with, but you need to remember that games fit within genres. The Kingdom Hearts series (KH2 specifically, because the later games forget about good mechanics) for example is more focused on the combat, which is why the story feels really odd or confusing once you start piecing together all the games, and action shooters are more trying to be playable action movies and give you something nice to look at. That's why there games try to have interesting stories, environments, and/or characters instead of a deep combat system. If all games focused on increasing replay value by deepening their combat or giving us more options to play around with, we would end up with games that lack in depth in other areas. For example, the many spin off games that focus on spamming you with references and known characters, creating something that is barely even part of the series.-

[ – ] DerSkipx parent reply Before I give you a retort have you played the entire Kingdom Hearts series so far?-

[ – ] Tibasu parent reply All but 2.8 since it's mainly a tech demo for KH3-

[ – ] DerSkipx parent reply You say "The Kingdom Hearts series (KH2 specifically, because the later games forget about good mechanics) for example is more focused on the combat, which is why the story feels really odd or confusing once you start piecing together all the games." and "For example, the many spin off games that focus on spamming you with references and known characters, creating something that is barely even part of the series." Kingdom Hearts' story pretty much has a general story direction planned out since KH 2, mainly because BBS already had some story elements worked on before KH2 was done. (pleases take my word the interview that I read this in was a long time ago) Two while I will admit that KH's story is confusing to most people there has not been a original character introduced within KH for no reason. (I would like an example) Three, while some mechanics worked better than others, every (execpt Coded that game was horrible) game has had multiple mechanics. BBS: Command Decks, Shotlocks, Command Styles = Drives, Multiple Charaters 358/2 Days: Panel System, Multiple Characters, Unique take on limit breaks DDD: Command Decks, Dream Eaters, and Flowmotion-

[ – ] Tibasu parent reply Where did I say a game had "an original character introduced for no reason"? Also, just because a game has multiple mechanics, doesn't mean the systems those mechanics create were deep. BBS for example has a very spammable dodge which makes you literally invincible when playing as Aqua as long as you keep smashing square. This isn't reinforced by bosses having completely random attack patterns instead of revenge values. Also, even though there are many ways to go about combat, mines and surges deal so much damage there isn't a reason to use other forms of combat, for example the regular combo, which is completely ripped apart and turns to just smashing X despite being able to actually add spells into your combo in KH2. Also, there are so many moves that have such large cool downs that during many fights, you put yourself in a disadvantage by using them. Not to mention how bosses barely stagger. In DDD everything compared to balloon feels lackluster. Why not just not use balloon? Well there isn't really a reason not to when the game gives it to you so easily. 358/2 Days you have what's almost a skill tree, which actually means you can play a certain style without feeling like a limp noodle. The games might give you options, but that doesn't mean they are balanced. There's a video on youtube by Bizkit047 talking about how even though there are options in these KH games, the combat isn't deep or balanced in anyway-

[ – ] DerSkipx parent reply Read the last sentence of your original comment that's where you said "the many spin off games that focus on spamming you with references and known characters, creating something that is barely even part of the series." Barely even part of the series aka a character introduced for no reason. Well I guess were just going to have different opinions. But one last thing I never said that KH's combat was deep that would be foolish I just stated that were multiple ways to go about combat within the game and saying there are "more" mechanics within Kingdom Hearts as compared to the Last of Us. Your getting away from my original point between KH & TLOU both are good games but one has better and more mechanics than the other. I just hope you don't see this as me arguing with you. Just us sharing our opinions with each other. Thanks for watching!-

Tibasu parent reply When I said "barely part of the series," I meant the game itself barely feels like it's part of the series, like how some games feel more like a cash grab attempt (Not any KH specifically, just in general for games). I probably could have worded that better. Also, I was mainly using the combat mechanics as a point to how some games focus on other factors rather than story. That's why I said both "good mechanics" and also "variety of mechanics," since having a well thought out system doesn't mean it offers variety and vise versa. No hard feelings, no worries there. I always see these situations as discussion until someone gets overly offensive. I still enjoyed the video and hope to see more discussions in the future

[ – ] GreenCobrasGaming reply Reason why I like Jak & Daxter over the Last Of Us or Uncharted. While I have only played Uncharted 3 of the Uncharted series and a tiny bit of the Last Of Us I prefer Jak & Daxter do to having the fun gameplay. While the story is great in the Last Of Us I still need good gameplay to enjoy the games more.-

DerSkipx parent reply I was actually thinking about using GTA V instaed of TLOU but since it had three main characters I gave it some slack.

[ – ] SavedGameStudios reply I'd have to say thay I wholeheartedly support this movie/game blurring. I'm somewhat of a more casual gamer and don't need 800 different attacks and combos blah blah blah thus I loved Last of Us, had the storyline I wanted a ton of plot and great atmosphere and wasn't hard to play. I grew up with puzzle/adventure games with lots of story, and so I like this genre of movie games. I think if you grew up with RPGs you'll like the new grinding/story/lore games and if you grew up with Doom and Quake you'll like the new non-stop action games like Overwatch and others... all these are different genres so I see The Last of Us as an amazing update to adventure games, they've never had great mechanics, but always focused most on plot.-

DerSkipx parent reply From your perspective I can see why you love it. But I just don't my games to become movies with simple gameplay connecting cut scenes.

[ – ] Fandomlife reply The weird thing. While you are right, I like my games with very strong narrative. I don't play much other games. Last of Us, Uncharted, Tomb Raider, etc, and so on. You see...I come at it from the other side - I never replay any game. Why would I want to do that? It never happens for any game. I also detest many open world games which represent the MMO-isation of everything with lots of crap busy work. So I'm all about the narrative focused games. They're why I play.-

bigduck112 reply GAMES ARE NOT FOCUSING ON CHARACTERS!!! PLAY SILENT FUCKING HILL II -

[ – ] Billion reply No... it's just you playing too much story developing based games. Go play overwatch or something if you think games are too story based.-

DerSkipx parent reply I do play overwatch lol they have the opposite problem especially when people are begging for more story. Two I never said tone back on story or there's too much of it, I just want them to focus on gameplay just as much the story. So at the end of the day there will be something for casuals and hardcore gamers both to love.
